WESSEX CAT CLUB SHOW – 6th March 2010. Report by Mrs. Dorothy A. STONE.

I joined this wonderful Club in 1978 when dear Helen Light, now President, was Chair and am delighted to see that it has gone from strength to strength. It was a joy to see Helen still able to judge the lovely exhibits present and thank her for all she has done and for her great kindness to me down all the years. God bless you, Helen! Sincere thanks to the Rockin’ Robinsons for so kindly inviting me to judge once again. I had a lovely day especially as for the first time in years I had a Siberian to assess! Sadly, my steward Sue Penfold (Kwansan Singapuras) had to pull out owing to having to hand rear babies, but my friend JULIE GRAY donned her white coat to assist me in my last and largest class of the day, for which she has my eternal gratitude.

AC SIBERIAN ASSESSMENT ADULT.

1 present.

Merit to BROWN’s LESTVITSA ANTONIN. Male. Black. 10 mths, 2 wks.

An alert friendly lad with some growing and maturing still to do. Short broad wedge set on a short muscular neck has required rounded contours, muzzle, chin and level bite. Profile shows lovely domed ‘lower forehead’ (brow), correct concave curve to proportionate nose. Good whisker pads, good breadth to lovely low cheekbones. Well furnished medium sized ears are quite well set and shaped. Expressive yellowish green eyes are oval in shape and obliquely set but could be slightly larger. A young man of very good size for his age has well muscled rectangular body of excellent weight and substantial boning, lovely broad chest, looking a little short in the leg at present (age) in pen, but were of good length when out on the table; has super large, strong rounded paws with tufts between his toes, broad based tapering tail is of good length and well furnished. Black coat that is sound to the roots but is rather greyish in colour on the ruff & rusty looking on his chest (out door boy?), has yet to develop fully, is currently too long and lacks the required very dense undercoat with springy feel but has a super ruff and breeches developing. An exceptionally sweet, promising chap in good physical condition who when I arrived to see him had tipped his water over and got soaked, however this did not disguise the fact that his show preparation was sadly lacking. I debated long and hard about awarding the Merit given his coat length, texture and poor presentation but gave him the benefit of the doubt in view of his general very good type. I look forward to seeing him again sometime.

DEVON REX MN.

2 present (+ 1 for BOB only).

1st & PC RICE’s Ch BOUNTIFUL JOEBLACK. Black Smoke. 14 months, 1 week.

Slightly immature head type still – fairly short high cheek boned wedge set on an elegant neck could be slightly broader, quite a strong muzzle, well defined whisker break, wavy whiskers and eyebrows. Profile shows rounded brow, flat skull at forehead, stop to slightly long nose that has a bump on it could be stronger, deep level chin, level bite. Lovely large well covered wide based ears have tiny tufts and muffs, are well shaped but could be set slightly lower. Lovely large yellow eyes are well set, oval in shape and have that typically naughty Devon expression! Elegant adolescent lad has slender muscular body of very good size and weight, good breadth to chest, stands tall on long slender well muscled legs, oval paws, well covered and shaped tail of acceptable length has a slight thickening at the tip. Totally coated chap has neat short fine soft dense coat with silky feel that is well rexed in close waves. A sweet, alert lad in top condition & very well presented.

2nd. SMITH’s Ch PHILOKALIA ALF NELSON. Choc Smoke. 2 yrs, 3 mths.

Good breadth to high cheek boned wedge set on an elegant neck, well defined whisker break but muzzle could be stronger, wavy whiskers and eyebrows. Profile shows rounding to brow, flat skull, stop to long nose is extremely weak, bite is undershot and scissor. Large wide based ears with tufts and muffs are well covered, shaped and are quite low set. Lovely yellow eyes of very good size are oval in shape, spaced well apart and have a typically mischievous expression. Mature chap of good size has weighty muscular body, broad chest, stands tall on slender muscular legs, neat oval paws, expressive tail of very good length and shape is well covered and rexed. Short fine dense coat that completely covers body, tummy and limbs is quite well rexed but is rather untidy, greasy, scurfy and generally lacking in show preparation (some animal fat in his diet might help). In good physical condition he was happier in his pen today.

DEVON REX FN. 1 present (+ 1 for BoB only).

BoB awarded to MacDONNELL’s sweet & gorgeous Black Smoke lady Ch & UK Imp Gd Pr BOUNTIFUL PEEKABOO.
1st & PC KEATES’s Imp Gd Ch PHILOKALIA JOCELYN FAFURST. Black Smoke. 9 yrs, 7 mths.

And so Jocelyn is first & jolly nearly had BoB too! Lovely short broad high cheek boned wedge set on an elegant neck, nice strong muzzle, well developed whisker break, wavy whiskers and eyebrows. Profile shows rounding to brow, flat skull at forehead and between ears, good stop to short nose, firm level chin & level bite. Lovely large well shaped & covered wide based ears with tufts & muffs, are well set when relaxed. Large lustrous oval eyes are well set and have a really naughty Devon expression! RED BURMESE NEUTER.

1 present.

1st PC & BoB RICE’s Pr SKAMPAWS MAX AMILLION. MN. 4 yrs, 1 mth.

Moderate wedge looking rather fine in the muzzle could be wider across cheekbones, gently rounded top of head is of good width, large well shaped ears are well set when relaxed. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, well defined break, firm level chin & level bite. Expressive, large lustrous eyes enhanced by mascara are of washed chartreuse are well shaped and set. Mature, elegant chap of very good size, weight and conformation has lovely muscular athletic feel, shapely limbs, tail of very good shape has a lovely “paintbrush” tip needs an inch or so to balance.  CREAM BURMESE NEUTER.

1 present (+ 1 for BoB only).

BoB awarded to Jill BUIST’s handsome chap Gd Pr OAKENSHIELD SULTANOFSWING

in splendid condition as always – we had a lovely cuddle. Thank you for letting me see him.

1st (PC N/A) RICE’s Pr SKAMPAWS JACK THELAD. MN. 4 yrs, 1 mth.

Wedge is much too long, narrow & of incorrect pointed shape, gentle rounding to slightly narrow top of head, large ears are well shaped and set. Profile shows rounded brow and forehead, break to long nose needs considerably more definition, lovely deep level chin, level bite. Yellow-chartreuse eyes of very good size are well spaced apart but the slant to the upper lids is too acute and they are obliquely set giving an undesirable Oriental expression. Mature chap of very good size has muscular body of good weight but is rather long in the back, well shaped & muscled legs, neat oval paws, well shaped tail balances. Short, shining coat that fits like a glove has required satiny texture and sheen, colour is even tho’ a little on the warm side but has desired “bloom” on his head, paws and nose. In superb condition he was happier in his pen today. Sorry to disappoint by not awarding the certificate but he didn’t tick enough boxes to justify it I’m afraid.

AC Pedigree Pet Grand Master Cat (Imperial Class).

1 present.

Imp Gd Master Cert FRANKLIN’s GMC LOUIE. Red/Brown Spotted Tabby. MN. 4 years.

This marvellous gentleman was my “take home” cat of the day! Shown in immaculate condition and very well prepared he positively sparkled with health. Lovely short fine glossy coat of rich sorrel red with a lovely rich apricot base colour, clearly defined spotted pattern with sweet tiny spots on his wrists but also shows his Abyssinian heritage having four distinct bands of ticking (he is actually a Ticked Spotted Tabby), dark spine line, solid coloured tail tip, black pads and heels. He has the most intensely expressive, huge eyes of light green that you could gaze into forever and the most meltingly sweet disposition. He had a wonderful cuddle and he made bread throughout whilst purring a happy song, bless him. I was delighted to see him become Overall BIS Pet – no more than his due, in my humble opinion. Heartiest congratulations and thank you for the honour of judging him.

AC Novice SLH Kitten.

1 present.

1st. GRIFFITHS’ MUSCAR JENICOL MARISA. Blue Point Birman Female. 5mths, 2 wks.

Generally a good head showing just a slight teething pinch today, wide top of head, large ears are well furnished, shaped and set. Profile shows desired gentle curve, tapering chin and level bite. Slightly round eyes are of good size and well shaped are currently a two-tone blue. Well grown girl has muscular body of good shape and weight, sturdy legs, strong slightly rounded paws, super brush of a tail. Lovely coat length with beautifully prepared silky flowing texture, super ruff and breeches developing, body colour is ivory white with distinct blue points, quite well matched gloves and gauntlets. In top condition, she was happier in her pen (first call approaching?).

AV LIMIT NEUTER.

 2 present,

1 judged. Sadly, No 103 flatly refused to be handled which was a pity as he looked super.

 1st. CLARKE’s RAGSHAVEN Mr. SWEETBEASTIE. 66a MN. 10 mths, 2 wks.

Immature head type as yet – jowly head could be slightly broader, has desired flat plane between ears, nice rounded cheeks, muzzle just a little weak at present. Profile shows more of a break than a dip, slightly long straight nose, good depth to chin, level bite. Well shaped and furnished ears with plenty of width between have required forward tilt but are rather large. Expressive well shaped and set eyes of good size are rather pale in colour. Very well grown chap of very good conformation, weight and boning, sturdy legs, strong rounded paws with toe tufts, good tail. Gorgeous, beautifully prepared coat has a lovely ruff developing. Aptly named, promising chap in top condition.

AC ABYSSINIAN or SINGAPURA BREEDERS’ ADULT.

 1 present.

1st. DARBY’s Gd Ch SILVERSMOKE SPINDRIFT. 23c Female. 2 yrs, 3 mths.

Moderate wedge set on an elegant, muscular arching neck has good width to gently rounded top of head, tapers to nicely rounded muzzle with required slight indent. Profile shows gentle rounding to brow and forehead, gentle break to nose that has brick coloured leather and a darker coloured outline, a super firm level chin & level bite. Lovely large well cupped, pricked ears with plenty of width between have furry edges but no tufts and are set so that they follow the line of the wedge. Lovely large expressive yellowish-green eyes in an Oriental setting are a rounded almond in shape, are well spaced apart, have a dark outline and paler oatmeal coloured spectacle-like surrounds. Beautifully balanced mature, elegant queen of medium size has well shaped body with straight back, rounded chest, slim muscular legs, small oval paws have mauve-blue pads and a smudge of colour up the heels, broad based tail tapering tail of very good length has a solid grey-blue coloured tip. Lovely short, fine close-lying glossy coat could be a little denser, ticking is rather indistinct down spine but has four much better defined bands on sides of body, mushroom coloured base coat, a little cream on her chin only, one broken necklace and quite a nasty hard lumpish scab on her throat. She has blue-grey lines from the inner edge of the eye to the top of her head and from the outer edge of the eyes to the edges of her ears, a well defined spine line which extends down her tail. In splendid condition & with the most meltingly sweet disposition this gentle lady was a joy to judge – heartiest congratulations on her BIS win!

AC ABYSSINIAN or SINGAPURA NON-BREEDERS’ ADULT.

2 present.

1st. SANDERSON’s Ch JINNOMNI DRASNIAN SAKURA. Singapura Female. 3 yrs, 5 mths

. Lovely head has required rounded width at outer eye and between ears, short broad muzzle & good whisker break. Profile shows rounding to brow and forehead, slight stop to medium nose that has rather anaemic looking pale pink coloured nose leather, complete liner, nice firm chin and level bite. Lovely large deeply cupped ears with salmon tones on backs are well shaped and set. Large lustrous expressive green eyes with dark outline & paler coloured spectacle-like surrounds are very well shaped, set and have required well defined “Cheetah markings” in the corners. Dainty, well balanced mature queen has slim, well shaped and muscled body of very good weight, slim muscular legs, dainty paws with rosy brown coffee-bean pads, dark brown ‘spurs’, tail of medium thickness and length has blunt end and solid brown coloured tip. Lovely short, fine close-fitting coat with a healthy shine is of warm old ivory with two bands of sepia ticking that extends quite well down the hair shaft, has required inner foreleg barring that is neither too heavy nor too light & barely discernible hind knee barring. Shown in immaculate condition, I adored this beautiful lady with an irresistibly sweet disposition and look forward to seeing her again sometime.

2nd. DARBY’s HIGHLIGHT SILVER ARION. Sorrel Silver Aby Male. 10 mths, 2 wks.

Moderate jowly wedge set on an elegant muscular arching neck has good width to gently rounded top of head, tapers down to indentation that forms the muzzle which is currently is rather fine and pointed in shape. Profile shows gently rounded brow and forehead, break to long nose that has pink coloured leather with a chocolate outline, is barely visible; chin has depth but recedes thus line from tip of nose to chin is not straight, bite however, is level. Large, pricked, deeply cupped ears the tips of which are chocolate coloured on the back, have tufts & plenty of width between, furry edges and are set well apart thus follow the line of the head wedge. Expressive hazel eyes in an Oriental setting are large but are rather close set, are a rather elongated almond shape lacking the required rounding the upper line of the eyelids having a very acute downward slant; they have a chocolate brown outline & pale coloured spectacle-like surrounds. Immature, elegant, unbalanced lad looking rather long in the body and rangy at present, body is of good size and weight but needs to muscle up somewhat, straight from shoulder blades to rump with well rounded rib cage; proportionate legs are well muscled and slender, neat oval paws have pink pads and a smudge of chocolate colouring up the heels, tapering tail is long enough to reach shoulder blades & has required thick base, tip is a solid chocolate in colour. Fine dense coat is a little long but close-lying and glossy, colour is a cool, silvery peach with a silvery white base colour; markings comprise four bands of distinct chocolate ticking, required chocolate lines from corners of eyes to the top of his head and from the outer corners of eyes to the edges of his ears, a chocolate line that extends from his shoulder blades along his spine and down to the tip of his tail, the hair around his lips, nose and chin is a silvery white & last but not least he has two broken but heavy necklaces. A sweet chap shown in good physical condition who needs time to grow and finish developing.

AC CORNISH, DEVON, LaPERM or SPHYNX BREEDERS’ ADULT.

3 present.

1st. ARNOLD’s Gd Ch PAPAVER ARTEMIS. Black Smoke Cornish Female. 2 yrs, 5 mths.

Medium, high cheek boned wedge set on an elegant muscular neck has a well rounded muzzle and crinkled whiskers and eyebrows of good length. Profile shows flat skull at forehead curves gently at brow and continues in a virtually straight line to tip of nose, deep level chin & level bite. Large well covered wide based ears set quite high on her head have rounded tips and lovely mussel shell shape. Medium sized gold eyes are well set, oval in shape, have required almost straight line to upper lids that slant slightly to outer edge of ears thus have that typically sultry Cornish expression. Lovely elegant, mature queen in her prime has medium sized slender muscular body, stands tall on long slim well muscled legs, dainty oval paws, broad based tail of very good length gradually tapers down to a fine tip, is well covered and rexed apart from a sparse but clean “stud tail” like area about 1 ½ “ in length and about 2 ½ “ down from the base of her tail. Superb short but dense coat with silky feel is just a little short and straight on her neck and shoulder blades but elsewhere is very well rexed indeed in deep, close waves like astrakhan. I adored this shy but ultra sweet lady shown in peak condition.

2nd ARNOLD’s Gd Ch PAPAVER ANDROMEDA. 33 31s Female. 2 yrs, 5 mths.

Litter sister of above and very similar - medium, high cheek boned wedge with well rounded muzzle set on an elegant muscular neck has crinkled whiskers and eyebrows of good length. Profile shows flat skull at forehead, gentle rounding to brow and continues in a straight line to tip of nose, chin has good depth but recedes considerably, bite is level. Lovely large well covered ears set quite high on her head are wide based, of lovely mussel shell shape and have rounded tips. Green-chartreuse eyes are well set & oval in shape, but are too large & have too much of a slant to her upper lids thus lack that typically sultry Cornish expression. Mature, elegant queen has medium sized slender muscular body, stands tall on long slim well muscled legs, dainty oval paws, broad based tail tapers gradually down to a fine tip, is well covered and rexed but could be an inch or so longer for perfection. Dense coat with silky feel is too short and straight on her neck, shoulder blades and down her shoulders, but elsewhere is quite well rexed in fairly close waves. Sweet serene lady shown in splendid condition that lost out to winner’s better chin, eye size, tail length, coat texture and rexing.

3rd ARNOLD’s Ch PAPAVER APHRODITE. 33 31s Female. 2 yrs, 5 mths.

Another litter sister of above two and very similar - medium, high cheek boned wedge set on an elegant well muscled neck has well rounded muzzle, crinkled whiskers and eyebrows of good length. Profile shows flat skull at forehead, gentle rounding to brow but line from bridge of nose tip has a dip, chin is of good depth but recedes, bite is level. Lovely mussel shell shaped ears set quite high on her head are wide based, well covered, of very good size and have rounded tips. Well set gold eyes are of medium size were very round in shape today. Medium sized elegant mature queen has slender muscular body of good weight, stands tall on long slender muscular legs, dainty oval paws, broad based tail that tapers gradually down to a fine tip, is well covered and rexed but is far too short. Rather long, silky feeling coat is quite dense and has an end flick but is well rexed in fairly close waves. A very sweet but shy retiring violet in top condition who failed to show to her best advantage.

AC CORNISH, DEVON, LaPERM or SPHYNX NON- BREEDERS’ ADULT.

He is currently getting his adult coat which is very short on neck & shoulders at the moment and has a few guard hairs, it is also rather uneven and a bit long with end flick in places but elsewhere it is short, soft, fine and dense, covers body and tum and is well rexed in close waves. A very promising chap whom I loved in top condition and with an exceptionally sweet disposition.
