Tabby is the cat's whiskers after taking top spot at national event

A cat from Bath is to be the star of a new TV show after winning top prize at the feline equivalent of Cruft's.

Saffron Rabey's pet tortie tabby, which is called Dairymaine Sarnia Cherie, beat off competition from 1,240 cats to win three categories at the Supreme Cat Show, including that of overall exhibit.

Miss Rabey, who lives in Catharine Place, said the show had been a "once in a lifetime" event for her cat.

The 36-year-old BMW sales executive said: "I was just completely gobsmacked when she won. I still can't get my head around it.

"I have been showing cats for five years, but this is the ultimate prize, a once-in-a-lifetime experience really."

Click here! The win was made all the more momentous because Miss Rabey was being filmed during the show at the NEC in Birmingham as part of a new ITV programme starring Joanna Lumley.

The programme, which follows on from Martin Clunes' documentary A Man And His Dogs, will be aired next year.

Programme makers asked to follow Miss Rabey's experience of the show, even before her cat won the prizes.

She said: "The film crew asked me if Sarnia Cherie was going to do well in the show and I said I hoped she would do ok. I never expected her to win top prize."

Miss Rabey has owned cats on and off throughout her life and often spends every other weekend at shows across the country.

She has three cats at the moment, but only shows two of them, and says it depends on a cat's personality whether or not they will enjoy the attention.

She said: "I was a bit nervous when she won, because all the press were there taking pictures, but she didn't mind. She actually turned it on for the cameras."

Although the prizes Dairymaine Sarnia Cherie won were fairly small – cat food, trophies and rosettes – Miss Rabey said it was the honour of the title that was most important.
