West of England & South Wales CC Show. 28th August 2010. Report by Mrs. Dorothy A Stone.

Always a pleasure to judge at my friendly neighbourhood show and this year proved no exception so sincere thanks to the trio of lovely ladies who invited me GRACE, LYNNE and PAT also for the great honour bestowed upon me of selecting the Overall Best Foreign Exhibit (more of which anon). Grateful thanks also to my dear friend HELEN MARRIOTT-POWER for allowing me to share her fantastic steward (my husband COLIN) until my own marvellous steward ANN HOBSON-KELLY was able to join me just before lunch. Very many thanks one & all. As previously mentioned, it was a great honour & privilege to be asked to select the Overall Best Foreign Exhibit, but my decision was really made for me by my winner, Mr. DESOLLA’s charismatic & ultra loving Usual Aby chap Gd Ch BRUNNBAKENS SABESI who really has the X-Factor and was thus a very worthy BIS winner. Heartiest congratulations to all his connections.

AC BURMESE CHAMPION ADULT MALE.

1 present.

Gd CC ROBINSON’s Ch MOLYNMEUX GOLD DUST, Cream. 20 mths, 5 days.

With fabulous type, large lustrous expressive gold eyes that you could drown in and a sprayed-on coat with satin texture & sheen, I for one am quite happy to forgive him the fact that although he has the required “bloom” on the top of his head, paws and other rounded areas (no, not those), in this venue lighting his colour seemed a tad hot today and he does have some faint tail rings and smudges on his inner elbow joints. In impeccable condition and with manners to match this gentle chap will go all the way, of that I have no doubt. He is a wonderful ambassador for the Breed and made yet another conquest in my steward, but who can possibly resist him? He’s the cream in my coffee!

AC BURMESE CHAMPION ADULT FEMALE.

 4 present.

Gd Ch STEPHENS’ Gd Ch MILLGILL THEATRICS. Lilac Tortie. 4 yrs, 5 mths.

Moderate wedge of good width, unfortunately she was sucking her cheeks in thus making her muzzle seem slightly fine today, lovely wide dome, large ears are well shaped & set. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, well defined break to slightly long nose, firm level chin. Large lustrous washed yellow-chartreuse eyes with mucky corners (slap wrists, Mrs. S), are well shaped, set & have that unique expression! Lovely elegant mature queen of very good size has well shaped body of acceptable weight but lacking a little in muscle tone today (just coming back to form after having babies perhaps?), lissom limbs, well shaped tail prefer longer to balance. Fairly short but rather open coat with silky feel & good gloss is of attractively combined pinkish lilac & varying shades of cream. A super lady who did roly-poly’s and cooed like a Turtle Dove, bless her. I have no doubt that she’ll be raking in the Imperial Certificates once she has regained her usual splendid condition.

Res KASAMUN’s Gd Ch BIENZOLI SUGAR PLUM. Chocolate. 4 yrs, 4 mths.

Short wide blunt wedge, gently rounded top of head is of good width but has a slipped crown (crown falls behind her ears rather than between them), medium sized ears are well shaped & set. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, well defined break to sloping nose, firm level chin but she has a dentition fault in that the upper incisors are concave. Large lustrous opalescent green-chartreuse eyes enhanced by mascara are well shaped, set & had a really smouldering scowl today! Well balanced mature queen has weighty but muscular body of good size that just about retains its elegance, well shaped legs, neat oval paws, tapering tail prefer slightly longer to balance. Lovely short fine close-lying coat with satin texture & lustrous shine is of a very pleasing warm gold-toned milk chocolate unfortunately marred by some noticeable contrast on her mask and ears. In very good condition but not in the happiest frame of mind today thus not showing to her best advantage – ran winner closely none-the-less.

 SINGAPURA ADULT.

 1 present.

 1st CC & BoB PAVEY’s Ch VALISA JAYSHELM’s PIPEDREAM. Male. 23 mths, 1 wk.

Moderate wedge has rounding to skull between ears & to width at outer eye (cheek bones), muzzle with a quite well defined whisker break seemed a little fine today. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead slight stop to short broad nose that has dark salmon coloured leather & virtually complete liner, chin has depth but recedes slightly, bite is level. Well shaped ears with warm salmon tones on the backs are a little high set & should be rather larger. Lovely large lustrous greenish yellow eyes have dark outline with ivory coloured “specs” surrounding them & well defined “Cheetah” markings from the inner corners to just behind the whisker pads. Young male of medium size & moderate build has firm muscular body that is still developing & maturing thus looking rather unbalanced & long bodied today, is of good weight, proportionate legs are slender & well muscled, dainty oval paws have brown pads with “spurs” up the heels, slender tail of medium length has required blunt vertebra at end & a solid sepia brown tip with colour extending up towards & along the spine. Lovely short fine close-lying coat with satin texture & healthy shine has refined delicate if a tad cold colouring of old ivory with two visible bands of sepia ticking extending quite well down the hair shaft, however since our last meeting his undercoat has darkened considerably (could be seasonal but the colour usually darkens in the colder months rather than in the Summer) with very well defined inner foreleg & outer hind knee barring, he also has a couple of faint broken necklaces & several tail rings. A very sweet gentle boy in super condition & well prepared. I debated again about awarding the CC on account of his ears size & set immaturity but decided to be generous again.

DEVON REX MALE KITTEN.

3 present.

1st PARKIN’s NOBILERO POULAPHOUCA. 33a 36d. MN. 8 mths, 2 wks.

Try saying that name when you’ve had a few! High cheek-boned wedge set on an elegant neck has adequate breadth but is showing a slight teething pinch thus muzzle seemed rather fine & whisker break could have better definition, short stubbly whiskers. Profile shows rounding to brow, flat skull at forehead & between ears, lovely strong stop to short nose, firm level chin & level bite. Large wide based ears with muffs & tufts are well covered & shaped but could be set a little lower. Gorgeous gold eyes are lovely and large, oval in shape, spaced well apart and have that typically naughty Devon expression. Slender muscular body of good weight has a nice broad chest but should be larger at this age, slender muscular legs, neat oval paws, slender tapering tail of good length is well covered & rexed. Soft fine coat is a little too short in places & could have more density, his underside, neck & the lower part of his torso is covered in soft down, elsewhere the rexing is developing nicely. A sweet serene chap in very good physical condition & type-wise very promising. He was in my book as a Chocolate Smoke (36b) but he is definitely a Red Smoke (36d) (as his breeding testifies) & my guess is that the handwritten ‘d’ was mistaken for a ‘b’. In the event that he has been registered as a 36b however, then as previously mentioned, he should be re-registered.

 2nd EARNSHAW’s SMOOTHASILK LIONHEART. 33a 27dtsx. 7 mths, 2 wks.

Short broad high cheek-boned wedge set on an elegant neck has a good strong muzzle, well defined whisker break & short stubbly whiskers. Profile shows rounding to brow, flat skull at forehead & between ears, stop to slightly long nose could be stronger, chin has depth but recedes, bite is level. Lovely well covered, wide based, low set ears with tufts & muffs are of good size & shape. Large expressive well set blue eyes are oval in shape but the rims seem rather sore. Sturdy well grown lad has slender muscular body of good weight, lovely broad chest, well shaped & muscled legs, neat oval paws, long fine tapering tail is well covered & rexed – such a pity there is a fixed deviation near the tip. A really super coat that covers body, limbs & underside completely, is short, fine yet soft feeling and dense, has no guard hairs at all & is very well rexed in close waves. Utterly charming chap shown in top condition that I loved to bits; he just lost out to winner’s better stop. I noticed that his Breed no/colour had been changed on his Pen No to Cream but in my view his darker points are Red and thus he should be re-registered accordingly.

3rd HUMPHREYS’ REXELLENCE WILLY ORNOT. 33a 36a. 4 months, 1 week.

High cheek-boned wedge set on a long elegant neck should be shorter & broader, has a teething pinch today thus his muzzle seems fine & his whisker break lacks definition. Profile that lacks stop shows rounding to brow; skull at forehead & between his ears is also rounded, receding chin has depth, bite is level. Real jug ears are well covered, wide based & of very good size but are a tad on the tall side, slightly high set & need more space between. Well spaced oval eyes are rather small. Well grown lad has slender muscular body of good weight, broad chest, slender muscular legs, neat oval paws, well covered tail of good length is rather pointed in shape & a little too fine and whip-like. Excessively short coat that comprises mainly guard hairs at present thus has an incorrect very rough abrasive Brillo-Pad-like feel, is what it says on the tin as regards the colour. A real little darling & the picture of health who I’d like to see again when he’s a bit older.

 DEVON REX FEMALE KITTEN.

2 present. 1st & BoB KEATES’s ROGUS BARBERELLA. 33a 36. 6 months, one week.

Lovely short broad high cheek-boned wedge set on an elegant neck has a good strong muzzle, well defined whisker break & short wavy whiskers. Profile shows rounding to brow, flat skull at forehead & between ears, strong stop to short nose, firm level chin & level bite. Large wide based ears with tufts & muffs are a little tall, could be spaced more widely apart & set a somewhat lower for perfection. Pale yellow-chartreuse eyes with typical expression are oval in shape & spaced quite well apart but should larger & more lustrous. Slender muscular body with broad chest is of good weight, has fit firm feel but would prefer her rather larger at this age, slender well muscled legs, dainty oval paws, well covered & rexed tapering tail is of medium thickness & good length. Coat that covers body, underside & limbs completely is short, soft, fine yet dense & is very well rexed in close waves. A typically adorable Devon that I could very easily have snaffled – she fitted in my little bag alongside my SOP purrfectly!

 2nd SPENCER-MILLS’s DIADEM DORABELLA. 33a 36e. 7 mths, 2 wks.

Short broad wedge with somewhat low cheekbones & set on slightly a thick neck has quite a strong muzzle, well defined whisker break & medium length wavy whiskers. Profile shows rounding to brow, flat skull at forehead & between ears, has more of a gentle nose break than the required stop, medium depth chin is level but bite is marginally undershot today. Fairly wide based ears with tiny tufts are quite low set but should be far larger & are more like Burmese ears for shape than Devon. Expressive yellow eyes are of good size, oval in shape & are spaced well apart. Well grown lass has muscular body of good weight with a lovely broad chest, she is rather heavy boned & thick set however (like her Aunty Mirabelle), her muscular legs are of good length, has large oval paws, tapering tail of good length is covered in rather long almost straight hair. Soft fine fairly dense coat with the rexing coming in well covers head, neck, torso, limbs, tail & underside completely but is untidy & uneven in length. In my book as a Black Tortie Smoke (36e) but clearly a Blue Tortie Smoke, I’m sure that this was yet another case of some-one mistaking the handwritten letter ‘g’ for an ‘e’, but if not, please re-register accordingly. Aptly named lass shown in very good condition - if she is as great a character as her aforementioned Aunt, she must be a delight to own!

LILAC BURMESE KITTEN.

2 present.

1st & BoB RAINBOW-OCKWELL’s ROSSIKHAN ICED GEM. Female. 5 mths, 5 days.

Lovely short wide blunt wedge, gentle rounding to wide top of head, large well shaped ears are well set when relaxed. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, distinct break to nose that has a slight bump, firm level chin & level bite. Expressive yellow-chartreuse eyes are well sized, shaped & set. Baby girl that I’d like to see rather larger at this age has well shaped & muscled body of good weight, straight back, rounded chest, elegant well muscled legs, dainty spoon-shaped paws, tapering tail balances. Still has her duckling fine slightly long baby coat which unfortunately the poor yellowish venue lighting made appear bluish in colour & lacking the required pink tone today. A picture of health & a little poppet to boot, she should do very well for you. I shall watch her career with interest.

2nd GRANTHAM’s GREENPARK PRECIOUS PEARL. Female. 4 mths, 4 wks.

Moderate wedge of good width showing a slight teething pinch today, lovely width to gently rounded top of head, unfortunately she persisted in holding her large well shaped ears flat (mood) which marred the balance of her head. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, break to slightly long nose lacks definition, chin has depth but recedes, bite is level. Golden yellow eyes are well spaced apart but should be considerably larger & more lustrous, they are also hooded which mars the shape thus they lack the required expression. A very well grown girl indeed with well shaped & muscled body of good weight, shapely limbs, tapering tail balances. Slightly long, fine close-lying coat with silky feel & lustrous sheen is glacial in colour lacking the required pink tone & has some incurred blue contrast on her mask & ears. In top condition but not a happy bunny today thus not showing to her best advantage.

RED BURMESE KITTEN.

 1 present.

1st & BoB MATTHEWS’s KATCHYN SONNY BOY. Male. 5 mths, 2 wks.

Moderate wedge of acceptable width showing a severe teething pinch today (bless him), super dome & ears. Profile shows rounding to brow & forehead, acceptable break to rather long nose, super deep level chin & level bite. Expressive, rather deep set gold eyes are well sized, shaped & spaced apart. Super muscular athletic feel to this chap & what a whopper! Body is well shaped & of good weight, elegant muscular legs, large but neat oval paws (small ones would be incongruous), tail of good shape & length has a small invisible irregularity near the tip. Superb coat for texture & gloss is a lovely rich bright tangerine that has just a couple of faint smudges on his knees. A splendid fellow in peak condition whom I look forward to seeing again as he grows up (& just hope that I have a block & tackle with me)!

AOC TORTIE KITTEN.

4 present. A class of very pleasing lassies all at varying stages of growth – do please persevere with the two Choc Torties.

1st & BoB ROBINSON’s VELVETMIST GORGEOUS GIRL. Lilac Tortie. 5 mths, 1 wk.

Short wide blunt wedge, good width to gently rounded top of head, large well shaped ears are well set when relaxed. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, distinct break, deep level chin & level bite. Large lustrous yellow-chartreuse eyes are well shaped, set & have that unique frown! Well shaped & muscled body is of good size & weight with straight back, rounded chest, shapely limbs, tapering tail with the teensiest invisible irregularity near the tip is of good length to balance. Quality coat of prettily patterned pink-hued pastels has a highly polished finish. Shown in top condition this little angel simply would not go back into her pen & gave us a real ‘melting moment’ when she settled down & fell asleep in the arms of my good friend & steward Ann which made her weep for the beauty of her (the first time a Burmese has ever had that effect on her & I’m sure it won’t be the last)!

2nd STEPHENS’s MILLGILL DEVINE DEVILRY. Lilac Tortie. 3 mths, 2 wks.

Super short wide blunt wedge, lovely wide dome, medium ears are well shaped & set. Profile shows rounded brow & forehead, definite break, firm level chin & level bite. Large lustrous eyes with the colour still turning are well shaped & set. Chunky baby girl only just old enough to be out but of very good size & weight with super hard muscular feel, sturdy muscular legs, neat oval paws, tapering tail prefer longer to balance. Has her baby coat still that is slightly long & fine is a bluish lilac marbled with varying shades of cream. Shown in excellent health & well prepared, there is nothing devilish whatsoever about this little doll who I feel sure will follow in (my Grand winner) her Mummy’s winning paw-steps.

3rd BELL’s MEDORAS BELLADONNA TOOK. Chocolate Tortie. 4 mths, 3 wks.

Lovely short blunt wedge of good width, top of head is wide & gently rounded; ears are well sized, shaped & set. Profile shows rounded brow& forehead, acceptable break, chin has depth but recedes, level bite. Expressive gold eyes are well sized, shaped & set. Well shaped body with straight back, rounded chest & fit firm feel could be rather larger for her age, slender muscular legs, neat oval paws, tail of good shape & length is covered in unusually long hair (which we can hope she will lose when she gets her adult coat). Short sleek shining coat with silky feel is of attractively combined warm milk chocolate & varying shades of red. Shown in splendid condition I really liked this sweet, lively lassie that ran 2nd (whose superior profile carried the day) to the merest whisker. Please persevere with both her & her sister.

AV Foreign Debutante Neuter.

1 present.

1st WHITING’s THICKTHORN LEONARD. 73 41. MN. 9 mths, 3 days.

Immature wedge shaped head set on a graceful muscular neck is long but a little too broad across the cheekbones, muzzle that is too fine & pointed lacking the required breadth & square shape also has quite a strong muzzle pinch. Profile showing gentle rise from bridge of nose to brow has required slight dip, broad nose has brick coloured leather rimmed in black, chin has very good depth but recedes, level bite. Wide based ears edged in black with paler coloured thumb marks on the backs are very large with rounded tufted tips and furry edges but are set much lower/wider than the required 45 degrees & he persisted in bonneting them. Large expressive yellow eyes rimmed in black have plenty of width between, are a full almond in shape, have required upward angle towards the ears, unbroken stripes from the outer corners & paler spectacle-like surrounds. Wild looking, immature chap already very large, has long solid powerful muscular body with deep broad chest; powerful, substantially boned proportionate well muscled legs, compact strong oval paws have dark brown pads, broad based slightly tapered tail of medium thickness is well ringed, of good length & has the required solid dark brown tip. Superb short coat has required satiny texture & lustrous sheen, ground colour is tawny agouti, pattern colour is dark brown & comprises: M on forehead with several lines running from brow up over top of head & down neck, narrower lines on cheeks, unbroken necklaces on throat & chest, a butterfly shape between shoulder blades wings being separated by pale tawny ground colour, unbroken spine line from base of shoulder blades to base of tail has parallel lines either side, oyster shaped areas on flanks surrounded by a paler ring of pale tawny, legs are well ringed down to the wrists but toes lack the required spots, his tummy is lighter in colour & has required spotting. The pattern matches fairly well on each side & whilst quire well defined lacks required density having a lot of agouti intermingled. Shown in splendid condition this adorable chap made bread throughout & loved us to death whilst I debated about whether or not to withhold 1st prize on account of his lack of type then decided on this occasion to give him the benefit of the doubt.

 6 present.

1st BURLEY’s Ch & Pr RUMBA CHARMEUSE SUPERNOVA. Cream FN. 11 yrs, 9 mths.

Superlative type to this venerable lady who has the most wonderfully intense scowl from her smouldering green eyes & now looking a million dollars having shed a few pounds (time I took a dose of my own medicine)! 2nd STEPHENS’s Gd Pr MILLGILL PANDEMONIUM. Brown MN. 6 yrs, 1 month.
